Like them or hate them, everybody has birthdays. Some people can't wait for them and others don't want to be reminded. In ancient Rome, birthdays were celebrated with parties and gifts while the early Christians considered it a pagan celebration. One superstition in Europe claimed that people were afraid of evil spirits that were attracted to people on their birthday. To protect the birthday person, friends and family gathered for celebrations to bring good thoughts and wishes. I don't mind the cake and presents (who does?), but why does that cake have to have so many candles?
